Movie Review: Beautiful Boxer

The information of this movie being released in the cinema came as a surprised. If it wasnÂ’t for my classmates who kindly inform me of gay-related stuffs, I wouldnÂ’t have looked out for this movie in the first place. Just when I thought it was the typical type of gay movie that showers of pink and giggles, boy was I wrong.

Beautiful Boxer begins with a Caucasian reporter in search of the legendary transvestite Muay Thai (Kick Boxing) boxer for an exclusive interview. Their meeting was unexpected as the person he is searching comes to the rescue when he was attacked by men at the local market. This incident led him fortunately to the right person and was allowed to conduct the interview. From here, Nong Toom narrates his story.

As a child Toom was instantly captivated by the beauty and grace of the Likay dance. As a young boy, Toom faced the hazards of his environment as he deviates himself as a boy and stays timid like a girl. Even entering the temple didnÂ’t erased ToomÂ’s realization that it was his karma, and that his soul is of a woman completely, locked in the wrong body of a man.

If I was to describe this movie in a word, it would be inspirational. The story of Parinya CharoenpholÂ’s (popularly known as Nong Tam) journey as he battles his way through the hearts of the people who both criticizes and adores him, and his personal goal of total femininity. Director and producer Ekachai Uekrongtham and his team of staff did a superb job at casting the right actors, re-enacting the fierce battle scenes inside a muay thai ring and the way the story of Nong Toom was portrayed and detailed gently into the hearts of the viewers. Hands down to the actings skills of champion turned actor, Asanee Suwan whom, at his best effort lived in the big screen the life of the transvestite champ. Also to complement is are the supporting cast, award-winning actor Sorapong Chatree in the role of ToomÂ’s coach and former Miss Thailand Orn-Anong Panyawong as his mother, which brought to surface the true aesthetics of being true to yourself, which the movie wanted to express. The vicious fights of thai boxing were acted with professional thai boxers in order to deliver to the audience, a realistic and strong impression at how perilous this masculine sport is.

In every great production and editing of a movie lies the story that shoulders all. Beautiful Boxer delverÂ’s Nong ToomÂ’s paradox of fighting like a man in order to become a woman was presented as an introduction as we discover at the latter part the true meaning of his goal. A great script of witty boyÂ’s talked and jokes, the comforts of a motherÂ’s words and ToomÂ’s own thought presented throughout the film. His thoughts as a struggling soul wanting to be free and as a person trapped in the mercy of his career.

Overall, the film was made to present to us a memoir of a man who never lost faith and had the courage to face his dreams with his chin up. A must watch for viewers who wants to see fierce fights of muay thai boxers or just want to be inspired by the story itself.
